Ryan Clark learned he was being laid off by ESPN during a live appearance on the program "NFL Live," according to a report from The Athletic. The timing of the notification added a dramatic element to the surprise development at the Disney-owned sports network.

Reports of Clark's impending departure surfaced Monday evening. A source indicated to The Athletic that ESPN executives were concerned the news would break publicly before they could officially inform Clark. Consequently, the decision was made to notify him while he was actively participating in the "NFL Live" broadcast.

ESPN had initially planned to inform Clark of the decision on Tuesday morning. However, on Monday, Clark appeared on multiple ESPN programs, including "SportsCenter." His final on-air segment during "NFL Live" involved a discussion about Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels' use of virtual reality for offseason training.

"The one thing I remember was when he transferred from Arizona State to LSU, he started using virtual reality here," Clark said during the segment. "And people said that was a big part of him being able to process more quickly and get the football out of his hands. … I think this is something that he’s comfortable with, but he’s also acknowledging that he has to get better."

ESPN has not issued a public statement regarding Clark's layoff. Reports suggest Clark was earning over $2 million annually with the network. He had been a part of ESPN for over a decade.

One notable incident from the past season involved a public exchange between Clark and fellow analyst Peter Schrager. The disagreement occurred when Clark appeared to criticize Schrager while defending the performance of Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Clark's comment, "That's the non-player in you," drew a response from Schrager, who asked Clark not to dismiss his opinion. Clark then stated, "Peter, what I need for you to do is not get mad and let me finish." Clark later issued an apology on social media for the incident.
