Rutgers University men's basketball head coach Steve Pikiell, 58, announced Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer and will be stepping away from the team to focus on treatment. Pikiell, who has led the Scarlet Knights for ten years, shared the personal news in a statement to the university's fanbase.
He did not specify the type of cancer but stated that he began "not feeling 100 percent" during the offseason, which prompted extensive testing. Pikiell confirmed he has undergone a "successful surgery" and will continue treatment while remaining involved with the team "to the best of my ability."
"My doctors and I have a kick-ass game plan to finish treatment," Pikiell stated. "I have great confidence in Coach Knight, the rest of the talented staff, and our exceptional student-athletes. I know they will do an amazing job leading our program when I'm not able to."
Associate head coach Brandin Knight will assume head coaching duties during Pikiell's absence. Rutgers athletic director Keli Zinn expressed the university's full support for Pikiell and his family.
"Those of us who know Steve, know the determination and strength he brings to everything he does," Zinn said in a statement. "I know he will bring that same spirit to every treatment and every day ahead."
Pikiell is entering his 11th season as the head coach at Rutgers. During his tenure, the Scarlet Knights made two NCAA Tournament appearances, their first in 30 years. The team has experienced three consecutive losing seasons in recent years.
