Russia is slated to rejoin the Olympic Games at the 2028 Los Angeles event, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has lifted its suspension on the country.

The ban on Russian athletes was enacted in 2023 in response to the invasion of Ukraine. This measure significantly limited Russian participation in recent events like the Paris Olympics and Milan Winter Games, with only a select few competing as neutrals and under strict conditions of not supporting the ongoing conflict.

The IOC's decision to lift the ban paves the way for hundreds of Russian athletes to potentially compete in Los Angeles. While the IOC has stated that a decision on whether Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under their national flag and anthem will be made at a later date, sources indicate that this is considered a formality.

The IOC also confirmed that Russia will not host any events and its officials will not be invited to IOC events for the time being. Furthermore, due to concerns regarding Russia's anti-doping agency, Russian athletes will be required to undergo multiple tests by international agencies before being permitted to enter global competitions.

According to the IOC, the ban's imposition was not directly due to the war itself, but rather Russia's claims over disputed territories in Ukraine. The IOC's legal affairs commission found that the Russian Olympic Committee no longer includes regional sports organizations from Ukrainian territories under its jurisdiction, leading to the lifting of the suspension.

When selecting athletes, the IOC indicated that considerations will extend beyond athletic performance to include their ability to act as role models who uphold and promote a peaceful society through sport, as outlined in the Olympic Charter.
