Roy Keane has sparked widespread amusement after drawing a humorous parallel between the football statistic 'Expected Goals' (xG) and a night out at a nightclub.
During a recent episode of the show "Stick to Football," broadcast by Disney+, Keane, a former Manchester United captain, voiced his skepticism about the relevance of the xG metric, which quantifies the probability of a shot resulting in a goal.
Seated with co-hosts Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, and Ian Wright, Keane animatedly questioned the statistic's value. "Do you know what that stat is?" he asked. "Years ago, when you'd go to a nightclub back in the day, and you'd chat to a girl all night, but you go home by yourself. What's your xG?"
Keane's analogy elicited roars of laughter from his fellow presenters. Gary Neville responded with a self-deprecating quip, "Roy, I kept clean sheets!" to which Keane replied with a smirk, "I'm sure you did, yeah!"
The segment also touched upon the recent summer transfer window deadline. The panel, including Carragher, discussed Liverpool's situation, with the former defender suggesting that manager Andoni Iraola might need to consider moving vice-captain Dominik Szoboszlai to right-back permanently.
Szoboszlai, who signed a new contract worth £350,000 per week this summer after being named Liverpool's Player of the Season, has been deployed at right-back sporadically. Carragher believes this position could be his most effective, particularly given the team's defensive challenges and injuries to other full-backs.
Carragher stated that he doesn't see Szoboszlai as a central midfielder and suggested his skillset might be better suited to a role similar to Trent Alexander-Arnold's at right-back. However, he acknowledged the potential difficulty of convincing Szoboszlai, a vice-captain on a lucrative contract, to change positions.
