Rory McIlroy, the world's second-ranked golfer, stated that his priorities are shifting as he navigates the demands of his professional career and family life. The golfer highlighted missing his daughter Poppy's first day of school as a pivotal moment prompting this re-evaluation.

"It's trying to find that balance and then trying to be home enough... it's [my daughter] Poppy's first day of school today," McIlroy said during a press conference ahead of the BMW Championship in St. Louis. "I would have loved to have been home for that, but I'm here."

McIlroy, 37, acknowledged that his perspective has changed from a decade ago. He and his wife, Erica Stoll, have one child, Poppy, who will turn six on August 31. The couple recently reconciled their marriage after McIlroy filed for divorce in May 2025.

Despite the personal considerations, McIlroy indicated he still plays a significant schedule, competing in five of the next six weeks and participating in events on both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. He noted that he plays more tournaments annually than many of his top competitors.

"As the years go on you try to, you know, life happens and things that you didn't have in your mid 20s you have in your mid 30s that you prioritize over golf, right," McIlroy explained. "Prioritize things with your family or things that you don't want to miss. That's the stage of life where I'm at. Where, you know, not all my eggs are in the golf basket."

McIlroy recently finished 66th out of 68 competitors at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, describing his swing as off and feeling "lost" during the tournament. He is scheduled to compete in the season-ending Tour Championship later this month in Atlanta, where he aims to secure his fourth FedEx Cup title.
