Joe Root's initial squad selection as England's Test captain for the upcoming series against Pakistan features a notable return to experienced players, a strategy he employed during his previous tenure.
In a move that harks back to the spring 2022 tour of the Caribbean, Dan Lawrence has been recalled to bat at number six. Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, and Matthew Fisher, who were part of the squad during Root's last series in charge, a 1-0 defeat to the West Indies, have also been included, signaling Root's confidence in their abilities.
The squad selection is influenced by necessity, with the team already adjusting to the retirement of all-rounder Ben Stokes. Further complicating matters, Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of Tests until the Christmas series against South Africa due to a knee injury. His absence from the crucial number three position means Jordan Cox will step in to face Pakistan. Cox made his debut against New Zealand in June, batting at number seven as a replacement for Stokes.
Despite the reshuffling, Cox's retention signifies a degree of continuity in selection. However, Ollie Pope's return as the squad's spare batsman so soon after being dropped has raised some eyebrows. While his Surrey teammate Lawrence has earned his place through strong performances in the County Championship, with five centuries this season, Pope's recall comes after scoring just one century, although he has maintained a solid average of 54 in Division One.
Pope lost his place to Bethell during the previous winter's Ashes series. England's director of cricket, Rob Key, had previously mentioned Pope as a player with the potential to make a comeback. Pope will serve as the spare batter in the 16-man squad, which covers the Test matches scheduled for Leeds and Lord's.
This emphasis on established players appears to mark a shift from a previous approach that often prioritized younger talent. With Bethell unavailable, James Coles, a left-arm spin option, was considered a potential like-for-like replacement in the top six, but this path was not taken. In the bowling department, Sonny Baker has been dropped, making way for the return of Brydon Carse, who has not played first-class cricket since being England's leading wicket-taker in the Ashes, and Sam Cook.
"We have selected a squad for the first two Tests that balances rising talent with the experience needed against a quality Pakistan team," said national selector Marcus North. England, who have not secured a Test win since 2024, appear to be prioritizing experience over experimentation for this new phase.
The England squad for the first two Tests against Pakistan includes Joe Root, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, and Josh Tongue.
