Cristiano Ronaldo's tenure at Al Nassr has already seen moments of tension, with his relationship with new manager Ange Postecoglou coming under scrutiny just three matches into the season. The veteran forward was visibly frustrated, gesturing and removing his captain's armband at halftime during Al Nassr's match against Al Ettifaq on Tuesday.

Al Nassr found themselves trailing 2-0 at the break, a deficit exacerbated by the 12th-minute red card shown to goalkeeper Bento. Al Ettifaq capitalized on the numerical disadvantage, with Ondrej Duda and Alvaro Medran scoring to give them a two-goal lead.

Ronaldo, making his first start of the season after returning from the World Cup, was replaced by Postecoglou at the beginning of the second half, a decision that proved to be inspired.

Despite being a man down and without Ronaldo in the second half, Al Nassr mounted a remarkable comeback. Sadio Mane initiated the revival in the 74th minute, followed by an equalizer from defender Abdulelah Al Amri just three minutes later. Mane then scored his second goal in the 90th minute to complete the 3-2 turnaround and secure all three points for Al Nassr.

Footage from the post-match celebrations did not show Ronaldo participating, and Postecoglou downplayed questions regarding his decision to substitute the star forward. "I think there’s a bigger story today, and that is that ten men of Al Nassr were unbelievable," Postecoglou stated. "That's all you should write about today, everything else doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what team because if you see 10 men in those conditions for so long, 2-0 down to come back, that's the only story today."

This incident adds to a history of controversy since Ronaldo's move to Saudi Arabia in January 2023. Previously, he expressed dissatisfaction over perceived preferential treatment for rivals Al Hilal, which is also heavily backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). At that time, Saudi officials expressed surprise at his unhappiness given his significant daily earnings, and the Saudi Pro League issued a statement clarifying that club decisions are made independently within a financial framework. Postecoglou then boldly opted to remove Ronaldo before the start of the second half in what turned out to be an inspired move He was seen angrily gesturing and removing his captain's armband as he walked down the tunnel at half-time Footage of the post-match celebrations showed no sign of Ronaldo celebrating the victory
