Portugal's new head coach Jorge Jesus has affirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will remain a central figure in his plans for the national team. Jesus, who signed a four-year contract to lead Portugal through to the 2030 World Cup, stated his intention to select Ronaldo as long as the veteran forward is in playing condition.
Jesus emphasized Ronaldo's value, describing him as a "symbol of Portuguese football" with significant influence in the locker room. "As long as he’s playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team," Jesus told reporters.
The new coach highlighted his positive working relationship with Ronaldo during their time together at Saudi club Al-Nassr, where they secured a Saudi Pro League title. "I had great pleasure working with him this past year, [it’s] easy to work with him," Jesus said, dismissing concerns about managing a high-profile player. "[He] is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me."
Jesus takes over the Portuguese side following their departure from the 2026 World Cup. His appointment marks a new era for the team, with the long-term objective being the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco. Jesus brings an impressive resume, including three league titles with Benfica and a domestic treble with Al-Hilal.
His immediate focus includes the UEFA Nations League match against Wales in September. A key challenge for Jesus will be integrating Portugal's emerging young talent with the established legacy of Ronaldo, aiming to guide the team toward potential success on home soil.
