Ronald Araujo has joined Liverpool on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with an option for a permanent transfer. The move comes as Araujo seeks to reignite his career and as Barcelona aims to alleviate financial pressures.
Araujo arrived at Barcelona from his native Uruguay in 2018 and has since made over 200 appearances for the club, finishing the 2025-26 season as captain. Despite his contributions, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick noted a stylistic difference, stating, "Our style of play is slightly different." Flick acknowledged Araujo's speed, power, and ball-playing ability, but indicated a desire for him to "try new things."
Araujo's tenure at Barcelona was marked by several high-profile incidents that drew scrutiny. His red card in the 2024 Champions League quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain was seen as a turning point in that tie. He also faced criticism for mistakes in the 2025 Champions League semi-final defeat to Inter Milan. Last season, he received a second yellow card and was sent off in a Champions League match against Chelsea.
Following the Chelsea game, Araujo was granted a leave of absence to focus on his mental health, receiving professional support. He returned a month later, making 23 appearances in the latter half of the season, starting six matches.
The transfer also provides a financial benefit for Barcelona. Liverpool will cover Araujo's full salary for the season, which represents a significant saving for the Catalan club, as he is one of their highest earners. This deal allows Barcelona to generate funds while Araujo seeks to rediscover his form at Anfield.
