The match-worn shirt of England legend Roger Hunt from the 1966 World Cup has sold for £11,000 at auction. The white, long-sleeved number 21 jersey was worn by the striker during a group stage match against France on July 20, 1966, a game in which he scored both goals in a 2-0 victory.

Hunt was a key member of England's 1966 squad that ultimately won the World Cup, defeating West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium. The signed shirt went under the hammer at Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire, with auctioneers costs bringing the final sale price to £14,300.

Andrew Aldridge, the auctioneer, noted the significance of the sale, stating, "Although England couldn't end the 60 years of hurt this week we were delighted to auction 1966 hero Roger Hunt’s match used shirt from the France group game where he scored twice." He added, "It sold for over £14000 and represents a truly tangible link to the last time England won the World Cup."

During his international career, Hunt earned 34 caps for England and scored 18 goals. He played in every match of the 1966 World Cup campaign, contributing three goals to help England advance from the group stages.

Professionally, Hunt spent the majority of his career at Liverpool, where he was the club's top goal scorer with 285 goals until his record was surpassed by Ian Rush in 1992. The Cheshire-born footballer also spent time in the Devizes area during his National Service, playing for Devizes Town.

Hunt's shirt is not the only item from England's 1966 World Cup victory to achieve a high price at auction. In 2023, Sir Bobby Charlton's England shirt sold for £45,000. Charlton's shirt was from the semi-final match against Portugal at Wembley, where he scored two goals in England's 2-1 win to secure a place in the final. That shirt was sold by Derbyshire-based Hansons Auctioneers and had an initial guide price of £50,000-£80,000.
