New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced Saturday that the team has extended a contract offer to cornerback Christian Gonzalez that could set new benchmarks for both the player and the franchise. Kraft stated the offer is designed to make Gonzalez the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL and represents the largest contract in Patriots' history.
"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player and as a person," Kraft said at team training camp, according to ESPN. "That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and, coincidentally, it's the highest contract in Patriots' franchise history."
Kraft expressed hope that Gonzalez, who is eligible for an extension, will remain with the team long-term. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed Friday that contract discussions with Gonzalez are ongoing.
The current contract benchmark for an NFL cornerback is Trent McDuffie's four-year, $124 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams, which includes $31 million annually and a record $100 million guaranteed for the position. Within the Patriots' franchise history, the highest total value and average annual value contract is held by defensive tackle Milton Williams, who signed a four-year, $104 million deal with an average of $26 million annually in March 2025.
Gonzalez, heading into his fourth year, had a strong 2025 season, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He recorded 10 passes defended, 69 combined tackles, and allowed only one missed tackle across 14 regular-season games, according to Pro Football Focus. He missed three games due to a hamstring injury. In the postseason, Gonzalez defended seven passes and made a crucial interception in the AFC Championship Game. The previous year, in 2024, he had two interceptions and 11 passes defended. His rookie 2023 campaign was cut short after four games due to a shoulder injury. The Patriots originally selected Gonzalez with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Oregon.
