LeBron James' agent, Rich Paul, explained on the "Game Over" podcast that James' decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers over the Los Angeles Lakers was driven by the opportunity to play alongside other high-level players and maintain his capabilities in his later career stages. Paul contrasted this with the Lakers' situation, stating they lacked a similar environment.
"When you’re in years 22, 23, 24, and you still have something left in the tank, it is a beautiful situation where you can position yourself alongside other guys that can play roles at a high level that give you a real chance of winning. And you don’t have to try to be someone that you’re no longer capable of being today," Paul said on the podcast, which he co-hosts with Max Kellerman.
Kellerman added that a change of location was a significant factor, which Paul affirmed. "What gave rise to that was a change of location. Lakers didn’t have that. They didn’t have that… That’s one of the reasons he picked Philadelphia," Kellerman stated.
Paul acknowledged that the Lakers made effective moves in free agency to acquire pieces around Luka Dončić after James' departure. Both the 76ers and the Lakers are currently leading their respective divisions, though Paul noted that there is still considerable basketball to be played this season.
