Great Britain's Mimi Rhodes and Ireland's Leona Maguire have been chosen by Captain Anna Nordqvist as wildcard selections for Europe's Solheim Cup team, set to compete against the United States in the Netherlands next month.
Maguire, despite a recent dip in form with four missed cuts in her last six tournaments, including the AIG Women's Open, has secured a spot based on her strong Solheim Cup record. The 79th-ranked player has a notable history in the event, having earned eight wins, one half, and three defeats across her previous three Solheim Cup appearances. In her debut five years ago, Maguire secured four and a half points out of five.
"Leona has proved herself at the Solheim Cup," Nordqvist stated. "She has a huge passion for the European team and her record speaks for itself. She is a player you want on your team especially in matchplay and I'm thrilled to pick her."
Maguire expressed her enthusiasm for the tournament, stating, "I love the Solheim Cup. It brings the best out of my game and I love being part of the team. I can't wait to represent Europe for the fourth time and to be back on European soil."
Mimi Rhodes, ranked 92nd in the world, will be making her Solheim Cup debut. She joins two other rookies on the team: Julia Lopez Ramirez of Spain and France's Nastasia Nadaud, neither of whom are in the world's top 80.
Rhodes, who turned professional after starring for Great Britain and Ireland in their 2024 Curtis Cup victory, has three Ladies European Tour (LET) victories but has experienced inconsistent form this year. Nordqvist commented on Rhodes' selection, "Since turning professional, Mimi has impressed me with her performances, winning three times on the LET last year and has played on the LPGA Tour. She is an experienced matchplay player and is a fierce competitor."
Rhodes, 24, said, "To now be selected for the 2026 Solheim Cup is beyond anything I imagined. I'm so proud to represent Team Europe so early in my professional career, and I can't wait until September."
Lopez Ramirez is in her debut season on the LET and second season on the LPGA Tour. "It's so cool," said the 23-year-old Spaniard. "I have a lot of respect for Anna and trust her decisions. This is what you dream of when you're a kid to be on the team and be able to experience it and all the big crowds. I'm on cloud nine."
Nordqvist believes Lopez Ramirez will contribute positively to the team's atmosphere and playing strength. "She has a great personality and she is a great ball-striker, very passionate and will bring great energy to the European team," the Swedish captain added.
Nadaud, who won the season-ending Andalucia Costa del Sol Open de Espana last year and earned her LPGA card, also makes her debut. "If you'd have told me six months ago I'd be on the European Solheim Cup team, I wouldn't have believed you," the Frenchwoman commented. "It's a dream come true."
Nordqvist noted, "Nastasia is a great young player who has been getting better and better in the qualifying period. After getting her first win on the LET, she is having a solid rookie season on the LPGA and is deserving of a spot on the team."
With these three wildcard selections, Europe will have four debutants in total, including Lottie Woad, who qualified automatically. Other automatic qualifiers include England's Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit, Maja Stark and Linn Grant of Sweden, France's Celine Boutier, Spain's Carlota Ciganda, and Nanna Koerstz Madsen from Denmark.
The American team captain, Angela Stanford, is scheduled to announce her selections on August 24. The Solheim Cup will be held at Bernardus in the Netherlands, commencing September 11.
