WWE superstar Rey Mysterio is set to face the imposing 7-foot-3 giant Omos in the main event of Triplemania 34 Night 1 in Las Vegas. Mysterio, who also serves as the General Manager for Lucha Libre AAA World, expressed his lack of intimidation despite Omos's considerable size advantage, highlighting his long history of competing against larger adversaries.
Mysterio's connection to AAA dates back to the promotion's inception, having participated in the first Triplemania event in 1993. Now, over three decades later, he finds himself in the main event of another landmark Triplemania, acknowledging the full-circle nature of his career.
"It’s a very special moment for me in so many ways," Mysterio told OutKick. "The fact that I’m now the new GM of AAA. The fact that AAA was the first company that opened the doors for me and I was at the very first AAA show back in ’92. I was at the very first Triplemania in ’93. So, to see this come full circle and to be in the position where I’m at now, it’s been an amazing ride, man."
The rivalry between Mysterio and Omos escalated after Omos injured Galeno and subsequently attacked Mysterio. Omos, assisted by Dominik Mysterio, attacked Mysterio again at Ola de Color. This confrontation led to Mysterio suspending Omos and the challenge for their match at Triplemania 34.
Despite Omos's strength and intimidating presence, Mysterio remains confident. "I’ve felt his power. Very strong dude. Very intimidating," he said. "But it doesn’t faze me. I’ve seen giants before. From the moment I started training at 8 years old, I was the smallest kid in the class. The youngest kid after me was probably 16, 17. They were obviously much bigger than me. I’ve always been in the ring with bigger people, bigger opponents, so, it doesn’t faze me. I’m not scared. I’m motivated. I’m antsy to step in the ring and I’m looking forward to tonight."
As the AAA General Manager, Mysterio sees this match as an opportunity to assert authority. "As a GM, I need to make a statement that no superstar or Luchador in the AAA locker room is going to try to intimidate me as the GM for AAA. And they have to know their boundaries and they have to not step over those boundaries and respect authority. In this case, this is what I had to do for Omos to respect some authority."
The stakes for the match are significant: if Mysterio loses, Omos will be reinstated to the AAA roster. Conversely, a win for Mysterio means Omos will never be allowed to compete in AAA again.
Triplemania 34 Night 1 is scheduled to take place at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, with Night 2 following on Sunday in Mexico City. Both events begin at 10 p.m. ET and will be available on YouTube.
