Australian tennis great Rennae Stubbs has drawn criticism from fans for defending Serena Williams' actions following her first-round defeat at Wimbledon. Williams, playing her first professional singles match since 2022, lost to emerging Australian player Maya Joint and subsequently skipped the mandatory post-match media conference.
Williams' decision was perceived by many as poor sportsmanship and a sign of being a "sore loser." Commentators and fans also noted her perfunctory handshake with Joint immediately after the match, with some branding her "arrogant."
Stubbs, who coaches Williams, took to social media to defend her player, expressing dismay at the backlash. "The hate and lack of empathy in this world is astounding to me. Especially when you have no idea what you're talking about. Just blows my mind," Stubbs wrote on X.
However, Stubbs' defense did not quell the criticism. Many social media users argued that a player of Williams' stature should adhere to post-match media obligations, especially after a loss. "Sorry but a player of Serena's stature has to be at that press conference after a loss, because everyone knows if she won she would've been there..." one user replied.
Other comments included criticisms of Williams' perceived lack of grace, with one user stating, "After a long, successful career, you'd expect that taking defeat with dignity should be easier." Another commenter observed, "She could have given her opponent the respect she deserved. Barely acknowledged her!! If she thinks she’s so high and mighty, then someone beating her deserves at least a handshake that meant something."
Williams' official statement, released by Wimbledon after her press conference no-show, acknowledged her return and the positive atmosphere. "It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here. The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything."
Following the widespread criticism of her initial reaction and subsequent press conference absence, Williams later issued congratulations to Maya Joint for her "great match." "Congratulations to Maya Joint on a great match, and thank you to everyone who showed up and showed me so much love. That feeling will never get old," she stated.
