Reece Walsh's Designer Shoes Spark Debate at Broncos Awards Night

Brisbane Broncos fullback Reece Walsh ignited a debate among rugby league fans after appearing at the club's annual awards night in designer sneakers valued at $1,695.

Walsh, alongside teammate Aublix Tawha, arrived at The Star Brisbane on Monday for the Paul Morgan Medal and Presentation Ball, sporting black-tie attire complemented by spiked Christian Louboutin Louis Junior Spikes sneakers. The footwear choice quickly became a topic of discussion, with some fans criticizing the expense while others defended Walsh's prerogative to spend his earnings as he chooses.

"Good on him, his money, he can spend it how he wants," one supporter commented, while another noted the relative cost for a high earner compared to an average worker. "A bloke earning a million a year paying $1,700 for shoes is the exact same scenario as a bloke earning $100k a year spending $170 on shoes. Simple maths shows how ridiculous the outrage is," the commenter stated, using their own figures for comparison.

Another fan added, "Reece you work for it so spend it how [you] want to - ignore the negativity." However, not all reactions were supportive. Some onlookers expressed concern about the public spotlight, with one suggesting Walsh might later find the fashion choice cringeworthy. Another commenter stated Walsh was overpaid but acknowledged the spending was his own decision.

Walsh's shoes, described by Christian Louboutin as low-top sneakers inspired by 1980s tennis shoes, are made from black calfskin leather with tonal grosgrain trim and signature spikes on the toe box. This is not the first time Walsh has drawn attention for his fashion choices; he was previously seen carrying a Louis Vuitton bag during Queensland's State of Origin camp.

The awards night celebrated the Broncos' season, with Xavier Willison receiving the prestigious Paul Morgan Medal as player of the year. Patrick Carrigan was honored with the Gary Balkin Award for Players' Player, and Deine Mariner took home the Allan Langer Award for Best Back and the Wally Lewis Award for Play of the Year.

The event also marked farewells for retiring players Adam Reynolds, Corey Jensen, and Delouise Hoeter, and acknowledged departing players including Payne Haas.

Despite an injury that ended his NRL season, Walsh may still feature in international play. He has reportedly been included in Australia's extended 40-player squad for the upcoming World Cup, selected by coach Kevin Walters. Walsh sustained a syndesmosis injury in Round 24 but remains a contender after his performance in Australia's 2025 Ashes series win.
