Nigel James, father of England footballer Reece James, has shared insights into the rigorous upbringing and disciplined approach he employed to shape his children's careers.
Nigel developed unique methods to instill key values in Reece, his brother Joshua, and sister Lauren, all of whom became professional footballers. One such tactic involved staged phone conversations while driving his children to training. During these calls, he would discuss hypothetical players facing career-ending challenges due to laziness or a lack of professionalism. These scenarios were designed to subtly convey the importance of dedication and a strong work ethic.
"They heard the success which works and they heard the failures which don’t work. Then it’s down to choices. Choices that they had to make," Nigel told Daily Mail Sport. He emphasized the need for players to not only showcase their ability but also to cultivate a likable personality that resonates with managers.
Reece, now captain of Chelsea and a 26-cap England international, is currently focused on recovering from his 10th hamstring injury since December 2020. He is pushing to be fit for England's World Cup quarter-final match against Norway. The right-back position has been a point of concern for England's coaching staff, with Reece having started the initial group games before experiencing hamstring tightness.
Nigel's influence extended beyond these staged interventions. He described how the family home was a hub for children of various ages, and the nearby fields provided ample space for practice. He also implemented a "20p game," where challenges like keepie-uppies or crossbar competitions were used to foster a competitive spirit, with the winner receiving a small cash prize.
"Reece was the one out of the three of them that, from a very young age, loved money," Nigel recalled. "He loved to save. He loved new boots." This early understanding of financial motivation, coupled with a passion for sports like cricket, contributed to Reece's disciplined approach.
Nigel, who now runs the Nigel James Elite Coaching academy, also drew from his own experiences. After a motorbike accident cut short his playing career and a difficult encounter with a manager left him demoralized, he transitioned into coaching. This led him to champion a child-first coaching approach, advocating for enjoyment while maintaining high standards.
"I want to set a discipline with it, because without having strong discipline, you’re going to create problems for yourself," he stated. He stressed that punctuality for training, for example, means arriving before the scheduled start time.
Reece's resilience, honed through such developmental strategies, is considered one of his greatest attributes. Nigel expressed confidence in his son's mental fortitude, a quality essential for an elite athlete aiming to overcome setbacks and compete at the highest level. Nigel is currently supporting the "Play Their Way" campaign, funded by Sport England, which promotes positive and enjoyable sporting experiences for children.
