Reece James is in a race against time to prove his fitness for England's probable last-32 knockout match in the World Cup after sustaining a hamstring issue.

The defender will miss Saturday's final group game against Panama, a match England is expected to win to secure top spot in their group. Manager Thomas Tuchel had initially planned to rest James for this fixture, after he played the full 90 minutes in both the win over Croatia and the goalless draw with Ghana.

James did not participate in team training at their Kansas City base on Friday before the squad traveled to the east coast. The 26-year-old has a history of hamstring problems, having missed six weeks toward the end of the Premier League season with a similar injury. While James believes this latest issue will not significantly impact his participation in the remainder of the tournament, manager Tuchel is likely to be concerned.

England has limited specialist right-back options, with Jarell Quansah and Djed Spence available to deputize. The team has already lost Tino Livramento to a calf problem.

A victory against Panama would see England play their next match in Atlanta on Wednesday. If they were to be leapfrogged by either Croatia or Ghana, their next game would be in Toronto on Thursday.
