Boston Red Sox infielder Curtis Mead will be sidelined indefinitely after sustaining a broken left wrist injury during his debut game with the team on Monday. The injury occurred in his second at-bat when he was struck on the wrist by a pitch from Athletics starter Jack Perkins.
Initially, X-rays taken Monday were negative, but further examination on Tuesday revealed the fracture. Mead expressed his disappointment, telling reporters, "Super disappointing. It doesn’t feel real happening in first game. There will be a break in between the next one."
Prior to the injury, Mead was batting .253 with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs this season. The Red Sox acquired Mead in a trade that sent left-hander Connelly Early to Washington. To fill Mead's roster spot, the team recalled infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox currently hold a 55-50 record and are 6.5 games behind the American League East leaders, the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees.
