Manchester City midfielder Rayan Cherki issued an apology after his post-match interview following the club's 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace. During the interview with Sky Sports, Cherki described his own performance as "s***," despite scoring twice in the match. The broadcaster was compelled to apologize for the language used.
Cherki, who was awarded Player of the Match, expressed his dissatisfaction with his first-half play, stating, "In the first half, we didn't find the space, and I played so s***." He further elaborated on his motivation to be substituted, "When I see Enzo (Maresca) wants to change (substitute) me, I don’t like that, and I need to show them I want to play, I want to score, I want to give an assist to Erling."
Despite his self-criticism, Cherki's brace in the second half, alongside two goals from Erling Haaland, secured the win for City. The midfielder's first goal involved skillful maneuvering past several defenders, while his second was a long-range effort that took a slight deflection. Cherki concluded his interview by looking ahead, "I'm very happy for the win, see you next week. Pep [Guardiola] was a big story, we will start another story. We want to prove it and we are here for that."
Manager Enzo Maresca disagreed with Cherki's assessment, praising his overall contribution. "His performance was very good, not because of the two goals but how he worked off the ball," Maresca stated. "He has to press. He was in charge of Wharton when Palace had the ball. His game was a complete game on and off the ball." Maresca acknowledged that Cherki might not have been at his peak in the first half but was pleased with his second-half performance and his impact on the team. He highlighted Cherki's passion for the game, noting, "He loves football. So it is much more easy to work with him."
Erling Haaland, who was seen smirking during Cherki's interview, commented on the team's early season form. "It's been a short pre-season. Rayan [Cherki], five weeks ago was at the World Cup. Game by game, we'll be back, we just need a few games," Haaland said. "We played well, it's a new manager but we've been playing together, with the addition of a few new players, for a long time."
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp lauded Cherki's performance, calling him a "genius." Redknapp noted Cherki's significant impact on the game, stating, "Cherki felt like the difference because his two goals came at such an important time."
The victory marked Manchester City's second Premier League win under new manager Enzo Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola. The team will host Coventry City next Saturday.
