Rangers manager Derek McInnes admitted that basic errors and poor decision-making hindered his team's performance in their season-opening 1-1 draw against Dundee United. The team failed to secure a victory on the opening day of the season for the first time since 2022.

Dundee United took the lead just before halftime through Lachlan Rose. Rangers managed to equalize in the second half with a goal from Thelo Aasgaard, but were unable to find a decisive second goal. Dundee United had a late chance to claim all three points, but Jesse Randall's chip was saved by Ivor Pandur.

McInnes stated that his side was "wasted in the first half" and that the "little basic mistakes and silly decision-making" provided encouragement to the opposition. He also expressed frustration that the team did not build on the momentum after scoring the equalizer. "I thought the desire to get the winning goal wasn’t quite the same as the desire to get the equaliser," McInnes said.

The manager acknowledged that the performance highlighted the need for further squad strengthening, despite having already signed eight players. "The new signings need to land pretty soon; I need to say that," he urged, emphasizing the importance of bringing in new players quickly for upcoming league and European fixtures.

Aasgaard, who recently returned from international duty with Norway at the World Cup, was singled out for praise. McInnes noted that Aasgaard "deserves a lot of credit" and has shown confidence, making his equalizer look "easy."

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin acknowledged that while a point is important, his team had aimed for a full three points from the match.
