The Los Angeles Rams are set to adopt an unusual travel strategy for their 2026 NFL season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. The team announced it will travel to Australia the day before the game, a decision that has raised eyebrows due to its departure from conventional preparation for international contests.
This approach mirrors the Rams' strategy for a previous game in London, where they flew in the day before, played, and won. "So they are of the mind, they don’t need to adjust, and maybe you don’t do any adjusting. You just go in and play the game and come back," ESPN insider Adam Schefter explained on "The Pat McAfee Show."
Rams general manager Les Snead echoed this sentiment, drawing parallels to the team's past international travel. "This is a little bit how we travel east; we did it when we went to London last year," Snead said on "The Pat McAfee Show." "I know Australia you go a different direction than when you go to London, but we’ve kind of done it this way before, so we’ll see if it works."
In contrast, the San Francisco 49ers will depart a week earlier to allow ample time for their players to adjust to the 17-hour time difference and acclimate to their surroundings. Schefter noted that both coaching staffs consulted various experts, leading to divergent conclusions. "The 49ers; I know they have spoken to a lot of scientists, nutritionists, and all kinds of people like that," Schefter said. "And they believe the right formula is to go in a week in advance. We’ll see who’s right."
The Rams' decision comes amid significant roster changes. The team recently announced the return of three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald from retirement. He will join forces with Myles Garrett, the reigning winner of the award who set a league single-season sack record last year. The Rams have also bolstered their defense by acquiring Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. Both teams were eliminated by the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs last season.
The 49ers have also seen positive personnel news, with running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Mike Evans, a key free agent acquisition, expected to return to practice from injuries and play in Week 1. Deebo Samuel also re-signed with the team before training camp began. Rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling has also impressed during the preseason and is anticipated to make an impact for San Francisco.
Despite the strategic differences in travel, the outcome of the game remains to be seen. If the Rams falter, they could face criticism, especially given their perceived status as favorites. The league's second game of the season is scheduled to take place in Melbourne.
