Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza experienced a challenging moment in the team's preseason game against the Houston Texans on Thursday night, throwing an 80-yard pick-six that drew significant criticism on social media.

Mendoza, the top overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, was attempting to build on a promising debut performance against the Cardinals in the week prior. However, in the first quarter at NRG Stadium, his pass intended for running back Mike Washington Jr. was intercepted by Texans linebacker Wade Woodaz. Woodaz then returned the interception for a touchdown, outrunning Mendoza down the sideline.

The interception appeared to be the result of a miscommunication, as Washington Jr. may not have been in the anticipated location for the check-down pass.

Following the play, fans took to social media platforms, with many criticizing Mendoza's performance and technique. Comments posted online pointed to perceived issues with his throwing mechanics and decision-making on the play.

The difficult outing contrasts with Mendoza's earlier preseason showing against the Cardinals, where he displayed positive attributes despite the Raiders ultimately losing the game. Raiders part-owner Tom Brady had previously praised Mendoza's leadership qualities, noting his relatability and resilience in overcoming challenges during his collegiate career at Indiana.

Mendoza has previously spoken about receiving advice from Brady, emphasizing the importance of making decisions that best serve his teammates and foster his development as a quarterback.
