The upcoming game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers presents a unique family dynamic as Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak prepares to face his younger brother, Klay Kubiak, the 49ers' offensive coordinator. Their father, former NFL coach Gary Kubiak, will also be navigating divided loyalties.
Klint Kubiak acknowledged the unusual situation, joking that his father doesn't text well and that direct communication about game strategy between the brothers is limited. "Well, my dad doesn’t really know how to text very well,” Klint said. “No, I think we kind of avoid each other. See you, talk after the game."
Both brothers have demanding roles, with Klint leading the Raiders' offense and Klay coordinating the 49ers' offense. Gary Kubiak, a respected figure in the NFL, faces the challenge of choosing where to direct his support. "I don’t know. You’ll have to ask him,” Klay said. “Rooting for good competition and a good handshake after the game.”
The family connection extends beyond the brothers. Gary Kubiak and Mike Shanahan, father of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, shared a significant coaching relationship that influenced their children's careers. Klint Kubiak reflected on his upbringing, stating, “Just really fortunate to grow up in that environment. I didn’t know it at the time, but I got to be exposed to a lot of football at a young age, and I’m very grateful for that, myself and my brothers.”
Klint and Klay previously worked together on the 49ers coaching staff in 2023. That experience deepened their bond, allowing them to witness each other's professional and personal lives. "But when you’re kind of in the fire with your brother every day, it definitely builds a closer bond,” Klint recalled.
Klay Kubiak also valued the time working alongside his brother, seeing it as an opportunity to learn from Klint's approach to the game. "I would love to get that chance again someday to work with him again, but it was pretty cool,” Klay said.
While acknowledging the unique circumstances of facing each other, both brothers emphasize the importance of the game for their respective teams. "Nah. We just see it as a blessing, honestly, to be able to share a field together,” Klay stated. “It’s another game for our team and we’ve just got to compete and play our best, so that’s really it.”
Any family discussions are expected to take place after the game concludes.
