Fans at Citi Field recently witnessed an unusual spectacle when a raccoon was observed reaching through a hole in the stadium's flooring to retrieve peanut shells. Video footage shared by a spectator showed the raccoon's paw emerging from the ground to gather discarded snacks.
The incident occurred during a New York Mets game, where the presence of wildlife has become a recurring theme. Some onlookers expressed disgust at the sight, while others offered food to the animal. In one instance, the raccoon readily accepted a hot dog.
This is not the first time raccoons have been spotted at Citi Field. The ballpark's proximity to a former scrap yard has been cited as a reason for the animals' frequent appearances. Last year, a raccoon was seen climbing stadium steps during a rain delay, causing concern among attendees.
The presence of wildlife at the stadium has, for some, provided a distraction from the Mets' performance. The team is currently last in the National League East standings, despite a significant payroll. However, they have seen some recent success, winning five of their last six games, including a sweep of the Washington Nationals.
