Miami Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers is experiencing a challenging training camp that has cast doubt on his position with the team. Reports suggest the franchise may consider moving on from Ewers, who was anticipated to serve as the primary backup to new free agent addition Malik Willis.
Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald described Ewers' training camp as the "toughest" for any player on the Dolphins roster, indicating a significant struggle. "There is nobody in training camp having a tougher training camp than Quinn Ewers," Kelly stated. "It’s rough out there. Quinn is a better quarterback than what he has shown."
Kelly also suggested that if the Indianapolis Colts decide to cut Anthony Richardson, the Dolphins would be interested in him, which could further jeopardize Ewers' spot on the team. "And it’s not just Richardson that I’ve got my eyes on," Kelly added.
Ewers' performance in the Dolphins' preseason opener against the Washington Commanders was particularly concerning. He completed only one of eight pass attempts and threw an interception. Head coach Jeff Hafley acknowledged areas for improvement, noting, "There were some missed throws, missed opportunities. The interception that he threw clearly wasn’t a great decision, especially in that part of the field."
Hafley did concede that on two other plays, Ewers' decision-making process was sound, with breakdowns occurring elsewhere on the field. "While clearly there are some throws he wants back, and there’s some mistakes, the process was right on those two," he said.
Adding to the concern, Ewers, who was a seventh-round selection by Miami in the 2025 NFL Draft, reportedly sustained a groin injury during the preseason game. This injury may have contributed to his difficult outing.
The team's situation at quarterback was further complicated by the performance of third-stringer Cam Miller, who completed 3 of 11 passes with two interceptions. In response to the struggles of both Ewers and Miller, the Dolphins recently re-signed Mark Gronowski, who had been waived just nine days prior. Ewers' groin injury was cited as a factor in this move.
Last season, Ewers appeared in four games, starting three, and recorded 622 passing yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
