Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester City, extending his stay at the club until 2030. Foden has spent his entire City career under manager Pep Guardiola, who recently concluded a 10-year tenure with the club.
Foden is one of only three Premier League players, alongside Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins, to have scored 10 or more goals in all competitions over the past six seasons. He achieved a career-high of 27 goals and 12 assists in the season following City's Treble-winning campaign. However, his performance in the subsequent two seasons saw a decrease in goal contributions, coinciding with a shift in his role within the team.
Last season, Foden scored seven goals and provided five assists in 33 Premier League appearances. The previous campaign saw him score seven goals and make two assists in 28 top-flight matches. The tactical adjustments in recent seasons have seen quicker wingers like Jérémy Doku and Antoine Semenyo being utilized to feed striker Erling Haaland, while Rayan Cherki has often been preferred in an attacking midfield playmaking role. This has occasionally led to Foden operating in a deeper position, which has impacted his scoring opportunities and ability to provide assists.
The Professional Footballers' Association noted that Foden had been a "victim" of the sport's demanding fixture schedule in the past, stating he "has not been the version we saw two years ago."
