Former West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel is recovering in intensive care after suffering a stroke on Sunday. The 63-year-old underwent surgery, which was successful, and is now receiving care at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville.
Mel, who managed Real Betis in two separate spells, took over at West Brom in January 2014. He was appointed when the club was four points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, following the sacking of Steve Clarke. During his 17 matches in charge at the Hawthorns, Mel secured three wins, six draws, and eight losses. The Baggies ultimately finished the season in 17th place, three points above the relegation spots, with Mel departing the club the day after the season concluded.
His tenure at West Brom included managing the fallout from striker Nicolas Anelka's departure after a controversy surrounding his goal celebration, as well as a dressing room altercation between players Saido Berahino and James Morrison.
Mel returned to Real Betis later in 2014, leading them to promotion to LaLiga for the second time. He had previously achieved promotion to Spain's second tier with Rayo Vallecano.
Several of Mel's former clubs have publicly expressed their support. Rayo Vallecano conveyed "all our support and affection" and wished him a "swift and complete recovery." LaLiga also shared a message of "all our affection and a speedy recovery" for the coach.
Mel has managed 16 clubs throughout his career, with his most recent role being with Moroccan side IR Tanger earlier this year.
