The New England Patriots faced a significant injury setback during their Week 2 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, losing five players to injuries in the early stages of the game. This adds to the team's difficulties following their Super Bowl loss and an opening week defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.
Among the injured, right guard Mike Onwenu suffered a particularly severe right ankle fracture. The veteran offensive lineman's leg appeared to bend unnaturally as he fell during a play. He was the only player immediately declared out for the game.
Other players sidelined or affected by injuries included edge rusher Dre'Mont Jones, who appeared to injure his shoulder; rookie tight end Eli Raridon, who sustained a thigh injury; and safety Dell Pettus, who experienced an ankle issue. Cornerback Marcus Jones also went down with a leg injury but was able to return to the game.
To compensate for Onwenu's absence, veteran guard Greg Van Roten, recently signed by the Patriots, stepped in at right guard. Van Roten brings significant experience with 105 NFL starts.
Onwenu has been a consistent performer for the Patriots since his arrival in 2020, initially drafted as a right tackle and transitioning to guard last season. The team's depth along the offensive line has been a concern, despite drafting Utah right tackle Caleb Lomu in the first round of the recent draft.
