Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is on track to be "fully cleared" this week, approximately seven months after suffering a torn ACL and LCL. Mahomes underwent surgery on December 15 and has progressed through offseason activities, including participating in individual and 7-on-7 drills during Organized Team Activities in May.
While a yellow, non-contact jersey was used as a precaution during OTAs, Mahomes was kept out of 11-on-11 drills. He also participated in mandatory minicamp, putting him on schedule for a full return for training camp in July and August. Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies are set to report to training camp three days earlier than the rest of the team, with Mahomes expected at the Kansas City facility on Friday.
This upcoming training camp will mark the first time Mahomes will face live defenders since his surgery. Sources noted that Mahomes has previously played in preseason games, and the Chiefs' offseason programs are known for their intensity.
Other quarterbacks on the Chiefs' roster include Justin Fields, Chris Oladokun, and rookie Garrett Nussmeier. The team's strategy regarding Mahomes's reps in preseason and whether he will split time early in camp remains to be determined.
