Parents are expressing dismay over the escalating costs associated with youth basketball tournaments, with one family reporting $260 in admission fees alone for a single weekend event in Ohio. The increasing financial burden is raising concerns about the affordability of organized youth sports.
Kevin Brandt, whose daughter plays on a top travel basketball team, described his experience at the Spooky Nook complex in Hamilton, Ohio, where he and his wife were charged $120 for admission to each of two separate tournaments held at the same venue. Additionally, parking fees of $5 per day added to the expenses. Brandt noted that typical weekend passes, which usually cost between $70 and $90, were not available.
"Someone HAS to feel a little guilty about this, don’t they?!" Brandt wrote on social media about the admission fees. He also highlighted the significant cost of lodging, with hotels in the area exceeding $300 per night, leading his family to commute significant distances to save money.
Another parent, Mookie Edmond, shared her experience at a tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where admission was $90 for a weekend pass. While acknowledging the commitment to supporting her child's athletic aspirations, Edmond found the total cost of travel, including hotels, admission, gas, and food, to be nearly $1,500 for a single weekend, leaving her questioning the sustainability of such expenses.
These rising costs are part of a broader trend in youth sports, particularly in the popular travel team circuit. The Aspen Institute's Sports & Society program has previously noted concerns about the affordability of youth sports and the potential impact of the growth of travel teams on these costs.
OutKick reached out to Spooky Nook management for clarification on their pricing policies for events held at their facilities but had not received a response at the time of reporting.
