Oswaldo Cabrera is returning to the major leagues with the New York Yankees, more than a year after a severe ankle injury sidelined him. A source confirmed Wednesday that Cabrera will replace infielder Ryan McMahon, who has been placed on the injured list due to an ear/throat infection.
Cabrera, a switch-hitter, had been performing well at the Triple-A level recently. In 18 games during June, he batted .397 with a .967 OPS. He has shown particular strength from the right side of the plate, posting a .385 batting average and a .965 OPS over 64 plate appearances. This offensive surge comes as the Yankees are scheduled to face a series of left-handed starting pitchers.
The utilityman's recovery from his left ankle fracture and ligament damage, sustained in Seattle over a year ago, kept him out for the remainder of the 2025 season. He returned to exhibition games this spring but was optioned to Triple-A to shake off rust, according to the report.
McMahon had been battling the infection for several days. He was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against a right-handed pitcher after experiencing discomfort, manager Aaron Boone had stated.
