Orlando Gill has become a standout performer for Paraguay in the World Cup, a remarkable turnaround for a player who was in football obscurity just 18 months ago. At that time, Gill had only played two first-team games and faced financial hardship, even selling his kit to support his family following the premature birth of his son.
His career trajectory shifted when Argentine top-flight club San Lorenzo signed him on loan about a year after his son's birth. He spent 2025 playing in their reserves before becoming a first-team regular, which led to his call-up by Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro. After being included in squads in March and June, Gill made his senior international debut in September against Peru, in a World Cup qualifier played after Paraguay had already secured a spot in the tournament.
Gill went on to feature in five friendlies, establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper heading into the World Cup. He conceded four goals in the opening match against co-hosts the United States, but has since allowed only one goal in three games. This includes a strong performance against Germany, where he made 16 saves from 17 shots on target. While he was awarded a free-kick that denied Germany a second goal in the last-32 tie, Gill's crucial saves in the subsequent penalty shootout earned him Fifa's player of the match award.
Following the match, Gill dedicated his award to his family, particularly his nephew Alexander, who is currently hospitalized back home. Having navigated his son's difficult birth, Gill expressed a desire to provide strength for his nephew as he and the Paraguayan team continue their World Cup campaign.
