Nicolás Fernández Mercau is expected to remain with New York City FC through the end of the Major League Soccer summer transfer window, which closes in just over a week. This comes despite ongoing rumors and reports that the player had requested a transfer and that the club had received significant offers.

A source familiar with the situation told The Post that Fernández Mercau will likely stay with NYCFC unless a substantial last-minute bid is made. The club itself is reportedly unwilling to let the player go, viewing him as integral to their commitment to winning.

Fernández Mercau, a 26-year-old Argentine footballer, joined NYCFC during the 2025 summer transfer window and has become a key player. He currently holds a tie for third place among all MLS players in regular season goals with 13 this season.

Journalist Germán García Grova initially reported on July 21 that Fernández Mercau had informed the club of his desire to be transferred. Further reports over the weekend indicated that Sporting Kansas City, a team whose front office includes former NYCFC sporting director David Lee, had submitted a bid potentially valued at up to $25 million.

NYCFC officials have acknowledged interest in the player, with Sporting Director Todd Dunivant stating earlier this month that the club was engaged in numerous conversations with Fernández Mercau and his representatives. However, the club has not provided specific comments on transfer talks.

Despite the external speculation, Fernández Mercau's on-field performance has remained strong. Following the World Cup break, he scored in three consecutive matches. Although he has not scored since July 31, he has contributed assists in NYCFC's last four games across both regular season and Leagues Cup play.

The source indicated that Fernández Mercau has been content with his role on the team. He has not spoken to the media since the transfer rumors began. Dunivant commended the player's ability to maintain his performance under the pressure of these off-field discussions, highlighting his commitment to "showing up and performing under those types of circumstances."
