Ogwumike stated that she felt a sense of fulfillment with her accomplishments, which led to her decision. She described reaching this conclusion while reflecting on her career during training camp.
Her career is marked by numerous accolades. Selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 WNBA draft by the Sparks, she earned Rookie of the Year honors. In 2016, she was named MVP and led Los Angeles to its first championship since 2002. Over her career, Ogwumike has garnered 11 All-Star selections, eight All-WNBA honors, and seven All-Defensive selections. She was also recognized as part of the WNBA’s 25th Anniversary Team.
Ogwumike ranks fourth in league history with 7,879 career points and third with 3,565 rebounds. She played her first 12 seasons with the Sparks before a brief stint with the Seattle Storm in 2024, returning to Los Angeles for her final season.
Beyond her on-court achievements, Ogwumike has been a significant figure in player advocacy. She has served as president of the WNBPA since 2016, guiding players through two collective bargaining negotiations, including the recent landmark agreement. Her retirement marks the end of a career defined by championships, individual awards, statistical dominance, and impactful leadership.
