The NFL's return to Spain was marked by an unusual interruption as the lights at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid malfunctioned during the fourth quarter of the game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Falcons. The stadium, home to soccer club Real Madrid, was plunged into darkness just as the Bengals were attempting to convert on a second-and-long situation.

The lights flickered and then went out completely for a few seconds before returning. Remarkably, officials allowed the play to stand, and the Bengals successfully achieved a first down, subsequently running out the clock to secure a 34-17 victory.

This incident occurred in the 81,000-capacity stadium, which recently underwent extensive renovations that concluded in 2023. It was the second NFL game held at the Bernabeu, following last year's matchup between the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Commanders.

The Bengals' win improved their season record to 6-2, while the Falcons fell to 3-6. Quarterback Joe Burrow contributed significantly to the Bengals' victory, throwing for 271 yards and three touchdowns, with wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase being a primary target, accounting for 155 receiving yards.

Following the game, Burrow praised Chase's performance, describing it as having an "intense impact" and stating that Chase was "unbelievable today." He emphasized the team's effort to find ways to get him the ball, particularly against defenses that played with a single high safety.

Fans on social media reacted to the light malfunction with humor, making jokes about the Falcons' performance and the Bengals' "lights out" play. This marks the second time the NFL has held a regular-season game in Spain.
