Newcastle United has identified Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, as a key target to bolster their midfield. The move comes as the club prepares for the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
Hojbjerg, a 31-year-old Danish international with extensive Premier League experience, is seen as a player who can provide stability and leadership. He has been performing consistently for Marseille, where he joined permanently last year after an initial loan spell for £17 million. He has made 75 appearances and scored eight goals for the French club across all competitions.
Newcastle had previously attempted to sign Hojbjerg from Tottenham in 2022 for £30 million. His familiarity with the Premier League and his steady performances make him a candidate to help integrate the club's younger midfield prospects, 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba.
Newcastle's sporting director, Ross Wilson, has been evaluating numerous players. The club previously inquired about Lucas Bergvall at Tottenham, Felix Nmecha at Dortmund, and Angelo Stiller of Stuttgart as they seek to reconfigure their midfield.
The need for midfield reinforcement is underscored by the imminent sale of Bruno Guimaraes, 28, for a reported £75 million to Arsenal. Wilson commented on the Guimaraes transfer, stating that while the club did not wish to sell, the player's expressed desire to leave played a role in the decision, especially given the significant transfer fee. He emphasized the club's need for flexibility and adaptability in the transfer market, noting that player acquisition plans often need to shift in response to opportunities and circumstances.
