Newcastle United is reportedly exploring alternative midfield targets after transfer talks with Pierre Emile Hojbjerg stalled on Monday. The Denmark international had been identified by new manager Matthias Jaissle as a key player to bolster the squad.
While initial discussions with the 31-year-old were said to be progressing well, Hojbjerg ultimately reconsidered the move. This development has prompted Newcastle to shift focus, potentially impacting their transfer plans for the current window.
In a related situation, Aston Villa had also considered Hojbjerg's compatriot, Joao Palhinha of Bayern Munich, as a potential signing. However, after dedicating significant effort to the Hojbjerg pursuit, Newcastle's setback may allow Aston Villa to intensify their own negotiations for Palhinha. Villa's interest in Palhinha, also 31, was amplified following an anterior cruciate ligament injury to Amadou Onana during the World Cup.
Hojbjerg is now evaluating his options, with Italian club AC Milan reportedly showing interest should he decide not to remain with his current club, Marseille. Aston Villa's director of football, Damian Vidagany, acknowledged Palhinha as a player who could fit their system, stating that while talks are ongoing, no agreement has been reached and any potential transfer would be conducted with respect for Bayern Munich.
