Wouter Vrancken, the newly appointed head coach of Hearts, has declared his intention to challenge Celtic and Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title. The 47-year-old Belgian, twice named Belgian Manager of the Year, arrives at Tynecastle after a successful tenure at Sint-Truiden, where he guided the team to a surprising third-place finish in the Belgian top flight.
Vrancken, who has signed a two-year contract, expressed his ambition to compete for top positions, citing the club's aspirations and the atmosphere at the stadium as key factors in his decision to move abroad. "I wanted to go abroad a few years ago but the right thing has to come," Vrancken stated. "Now I was at the end of contract, so I had an opening. Then Hearts came and I know a little bit of Hearts because I’m good friends with the technical director of Union (St Gilloise), so you know the link."
He drew parallels to his past experiences, including leading Mechelen to a second-tier title and Belgian Cup double in 2018. He also came close to winning the league with Genk in 2023, only for an equalizer in the 94th minute to deny them the title. "I know the feeling," Vrancken said. "It’s not a nice feeling and can take some time to get over it. But with a good spirit, with a lot of energy and constructive work, we can get over it as soon as possible and fight for the new things to come."
The new head coach also indicated an interest in the club's recruitment strategies, particularly the use of Jamestown Analytics technology. "I always wanted to look behind the curtain," he said. "I have a lot of confidence in the way the recruitment works because I was confronted with it in Belgium. And now from the other side, I want to be part of it."
On his preferred style of play, Vrancken emphasized a proactive and enjoyable approach. "I like to have the ball and also a lot of joy in the game. Players, when they want to reach their full potential, they have to enjoy the game and enjoy what they are doing," he explained. "We try to create this with positive play, as offensive as possible, with a lot of pressure, with a lot of intensity, energy."
