Despite the New York Knicks securing an NBA championship, Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai indicated that the team's rebuilding plan will not change. Tsai acknowledged the "embarrassing" feeling of a crosstown rival winning the title but emphasized that such external factors should not influence the team's strategic approach.
"Every year, some team is going to win a championship," Tsai told Nets Daily. "So it happens that this year that team is in the same city. It doesn’t make us feel very good. It irates our fanbase, and it is embarrassing, but in business or in competition, in sports, or in anything, you shouldn’t let the embarrassment factor affect how you perform."
Tsai outlined that the Nets have an existing plan and are "on a positive trajectory." He stated that the Knicks' success does not alter his thinking regarding the team's future.
The Nets' pursuit of a championship previously involved forming a "Big 3" with stars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden, acquired through free agency and trades in 2019 and 2021. However, injuries hampered the trio, and the team's closest approach to a title was a 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. Subsequent seasons saw the team in a transitional phase, with limited success and a focus on accumulating young draft talent.
Meanwhile, the Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson, emerged as a consistent winner, culminating in a playoff run that concluded with an NBA Finals victory. The Nets, under head coach Jordi Fernández, appear to be shifting focus towards winning, having signed Julius Randle in free agency to complement a young core that includes first-round picks Mikel Brown Jr. and Egor Dëmin. General Manager Sean Marks has expressed optimism about the team's direction, stating that the Nets control their own path.
Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment's Chief Financial Officer Peter Stern commented that the franchise was "happy for the Knicks" and suggested that increased local basketball enthusiasm could benefit the NBA as a whole by reactivating dormant fan bases.
