Navorro Bowman Jr., son of former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Navorro Bowman, has committed to play college basketball at the University of Connecticut, according to ESPN.com.
Bowman Jr., a five-star recruit ranked 11th nationally in the class of 2027 by 247 Sports, is the highest-ranked player in his class to commit to a university and the first for UConn head coach Dan Hurley. He is a 6-foot-3 guard who averaged 22.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5 assists per game during his junior season.
His father, Navorro Bowman, played seven NFL seasons after being drafted by the 49ers in 2010. The elder Bowman was a key defensive player, contributing significantly to a top-ranked 49ers defense that reached the Super Bowl. Despite suffering a torn ACL and MCL in 2014, he made a notable comeback, earning first-team All-Pro honors for the fourth time in his career in 2015 and receiving the Ed Block Courage Award. He retired from the NFL in 2017.
The commitment comes amid evolving trends in college sports recruiting, including the impact of the transfer portal and the NCAA's five-for-five eligibility model, which have made some recruits hesitant to commit early in their academic year.
