Motherwell's European campaign concluded with a 4-1 defeat away to Europa League finalists Freiburg, resulting in a 7-2 aggregate loss in their Conference League play-off tie. The Scottish club's aspirations were hampered by a second consecutive match featuring a crucial red card.
Freiburg took an early lead in the sixth minute when Derry Scherhant converted a defense-splitting pass from Maximilian Eggestein. Motherwell equalized in the 22nd minute through Emmanuel Longelo, whose long-range shot was fumbled into the net by Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. However, the visitors' hopes of building on the equalizer were diminished just before the hour mark when Jake Girdwood-Reich received a straight red card for a foul on Scherhant as he broke through on goal.
From the resulting free-kick, Scherhant's effort was saved, and Freiburg scored from the ensuing corner via Igor Matanovic. Three minutes later, Cyriaque Irie added a third goal for the German side from another corner. Keisuke Goto sealed the 4-1 victory with a late strike in the 85th minute.
Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson acknowledged the difficulty of playing with ten men, stating that his team competed well for the first 60 minutes. "I think we competed really, really well for 60 minutes and after that obviously it becomes much more difficult once again," Johansson said. "From there it's about trying to protect as much as you can. Could we have done that a little bit better? Maybe in some decisive actions in our own box but I think the guys they tried everything that they had so all in all it was good for 60 minutes and then it was tough."
Freiburg, who reached the Europa League final in the previous season, extended their aggregate lead early in the match. Despite Longelo's equalizer, Motherwell struggled to contain Freiburg's pressure, with Yuito Suzuki and Scherhant creating further chances before halftime. Seb Palmer-Houlden had a shot saved for Motherwell, and Cyriaque Irie hit the crossbar for Freiburg before the break.
The red card for Girdwood-Reich proved pivotal, shifting the momentum decisively in Freiburg's favor and ultimately ending Motherwell's European journey.
