Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts narrowly avoided a serious injury on Wednesday when a foul ball deflected off his helmet in the on-deck circle. The incident occurred during the Dodgers' game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Betts was stepping into the on-deck circle in the top of the second inning while Max Muncy was at bat. Muncy swung and missed at a pitch, sending a foul ball directly backward toward the Dodgers' third base dugout. Betts, standing nearby, had only a moment to react.
He turned his head, and the ball glanced off his helmet, preventing a more direct impact. Betts immediately fell to the ground, but quickly got back up and signaled he was unharmed. The ball deflected over the dugout bench.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a member of the team's training staff rushed to the field to check on Betts. After a brief assessment, Betts was cleared to continue playing and proceeded to his at-bat, where he flew out to center field.
