Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has issued a statement defending his controversial remarks about intentionally delaying whistle-blows during matches. Dean had previously stated on Jamie Vardy's podcast that he would sometimes see "how long we can go without blowing a whistle," claiming to have done so for "20, 25 minutes" in Premier League games before the introduction of VAR.
These comments drew criticism from other former officials, including Mark Halsey, who suggested they added pressure on current referees. In response, Dean posted on his Instagram story, asserting that throughout his 25-year career, he "always applied the Laws of the Game to the best of my ability."
Dean explained his approach was to "allow the game to flow" and to "apply a high threshold for contact which the players liked." He added that he would always take appropriate action if he saw a foul challenge requiring it. He emphasized that his intention was never to "question, criticise or undermine the integrity of refereeing in this country," and that he has "always respected the profession and the responsibility that comes with being a referee."
