Michael Carrick has stated he will not resign as Manchester United head coach, despite the team's poor performance and a tense post-match interview following a dramatic 4-4 draw with Aston Villa. The result left the club in the relegation zone heading into the international break.
Carrick's stance came after he was questioned about his future by Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison. "What do you expect to happen over the next few weeks? You've been asked time and again about your future? I know you have said that you walking away was the best for the club, you'd probably do it," Davison asked. Carrick firmly replied, "It's not going to happen, no."
When pressed further about potential conversations regarding his role, Carrick responded with a quizzical, "Is there?" before stating, "You know the situation, we haven't won enough games. But I expect to move forward with things we've been working on, showing a lot of the good from today tighten up a few mistakes and win some football matches."
The draw against Aston Villa saw Manchester United concede two goals in the opening four minutes and then fall behind again at the start of the second half, despite holding a half-time lead. The team currently sits 18th in the Premier League table with eight points from 10 matches, one point above Crystal Palace.
Despite the precarious league position, Carrick rejected the notion that the team is in a relegation battle. "We're in November," he stated bluntly. "I don't like this situation where we are and where we're at. But we can do something about it."
This is not the first time Carrick has engaged in a notably sharp post-match interview this season. In August, he reacted strongly to a question about his players' alleged lack of "passion" after a defeat to Hull City. "Oh come on, that's ridiculous," Carrick had said at the time, arguing that the loss was due to set-piece errors rather than a lack of commitment.
Manchester United faces a challenging fixture after the international break when they travel to Anfield to play rivals Liverpool on November 22.
