Despite a season that has largely been a disappointment, the New York Mets found reasons for optimism in their recent 6-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Rookie outfielder A.J. Ewing and pitcher Christian Scott showcased their potential, hinting at a stronger future for the franchise.
Ewing, a 21-year-old fourth-round pick from 2023, has quickly established himself as a promising leadoff hitter and center fielder. In Wednesday's game, he contributed to the Mets' offense with a solo home run in the first inning and a double in the eighth. His performance has been trending upward, with an on-base plus slugging (OPS) above .900 over his last 33 games. Ewing, the seventh-youngest hitter in the majors this year, appears comfortable against major league pitching and is seen as a potential cornerstone for the team for years to come. He is part of a developing outfield that also includes Carson Benge and star player Juan Soto.
"It's a dynamic outfield with young kids playing alongside of the best hitter in the game, and the young kids play the game the right way," said interim manager Andy Green. "I think a lot of people, from the scouts that found them to the people that coach them, helped those guys take steps forward, and now they belong in the outfield. They know it."
Christian Scott, having returned from Tommy John surgery in 2024, has solidified his place in the Mets' rotation. The 27-year-old right-hander pitched five shutout innings against the Royals, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out five. This performance lowered his earned run average to 3.10 over 12 starts. While Scott still needs to work on pitching deeper into games, as evidenced by his 90 pitches for 15 outs, his improved control, with only one walk issued, marks progress.
The Mets' offense came alive in the eighth inning, scoring five runs with two outs. Key contributions came from Jared Young's bases-loaded hit, a single by Brett Baty, a wild pitch, and a single from Francisco Alvarez. This late-inning surge led to only their second home win at Citi Field in their last nine games.
The Mets currently hold a 39-54 record. While the season has been challenging, the emergence of young talent like Ewing and Scott provides a narrative of resilience and future potential for the team.
