The New York Mets' farm system has experienced a notable regression this season, a sentiment echoed by owner Steve Cohen. While the major league club has struggled, the organization's minor league prospects, which were anticipated to be a source of optimism, have also fallen short of expectations, particularly following a successful 2025 campaign that showcased promising young talent.

"We’ve had regression in our farm system," Cohen stated during a recent appearance on "The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman." He acknowledged that player development does not always follow a predictable, upward trajectory. "Now, I’m told that development isn’t linear, OK? It isn’t like some straight line where everything goes up."

The announcement of the All-Star Futures Game rosters this week highlighted the annual moment of anticipation for baseball's emerging talent. However, the Mets' sole representative on the roster, Ryan Clifford, is currently batting below .200, underscoring the team's broader development challenges.

Despite the current setbacks, the acknowledgment of regression is not necessarily indicative of fundamental issues within the farm system, according to the analysis. The team's performance in Queens has been mirrored by the disappointing output from its minor league affiliates, a stark contrast to the revelations seen in the previous season.
