The New York Mets selected pitcher Carson Wiggins with the 27th overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft, a move that drew surprise from observers across the sport.
Wiggins had thrown a total of 14 innings over two seasons at the University of Arkansas and was coming off elbow surgery, making his selection at that position unexpected.
Even Wiggins' pitching coach at Arkansas, Matt Hobbs, expressed surprise that the pitcher lasted until the 27th pick. Hobbs stated that if Wiggins had been healthy and pitched a full season, he would have been considered a top-10, or possibly even a top-five, draft prospect. Hobbs believes the Mets "got a great deal" with the pick. Mets draft pick Carson Wiggins walks on the field for the Razorbacks.
