Daniil Medvedev advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday after a second-round match against American Sebastian Gorzny that featured an unusual interruption: two birds landing on the net. The incident occurred during the second set, leading to Medvedev expressing frustration over the need to replay a point.
"I saw them straight away and thought the point would stop straight away," Medvedev said after his 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 victory. "The moment I hit the winner we stop and I say why?"
The brief pause for the point replay did not significantly impact the match, and Medvedev went on to secure his win. He used 14 aces to overpower Gorzny and maintained a lead throughout the match, only trailing by one game at certain points. "I think was quite good, good level," Medvedev commented on his performance. "He raised his level in the third, so I’m happy that I managed, you know, to keep fighting, to stay tough."
This marks another memorable moment for Medvedev at the U.S. Open, adding to a history of unusual occurrences during his matches at the tournament. Last year, he was involved in a heated exchange with the chair umpire after a photographer entered the court during a crucial moment, which he later followed by smashing his racket.
