Mbappé Explains Refusal to Wear Ceuta Solidarity Shirt

Kylian Mbappé has publicly addressed his decision to decline wearing a Real Madrid solidarity t-shirt for the Spanish enclave of Ceuta during a recent match. Mbappé, along with teammates Vinícius Júnior and Ibrahima Konaté, were the only players who did not wear shirts designed to show support for Ceuta amid a migrant crisis.

In an interview with AS, Mbappé clarified his stance, emphasizing his solidarity with Ceuta and its residents. "I want to explain this clearly so people understand," Mbappé stated. "It was the club's decision to include the jersey, to have us wear it. We players had to wear it."

He continued, "The first thing I want to say is that I stand in full solidarity with Ceuta and with all the victims. Because before I’m a player, I’m a human being. But I also wanted to make a gesture and spare a thought for all the immigrants who have lost their lives and who are also living in harsh conditions."

Mbappé expressed that the situation was difficult, fearing misinterpretation. "It wasn’t an easy position to take, it was difficult because in the end, people might think I’m against the people of Ceuta, but no, absolutely not. I have nothing against them, and I support them 100% in my thoughts. But I also wanted to spare a thought for all the people who are suffering, because at the end of the day, I’m human, and I don’t want to prioritize one form of suffering over another."

The t-shirts bore the message 'We are all Caballas,' a nickname for Ceuta's residents. The players' decision to cover the message before their match against Elche, which Real Madrid won 3-2, drew criticism from some supporters. Online comments ranged from hoping the players would be booed to suggesting heavy fines and suspensions.

Earlier in the summer, Spain declared a state of emergency in Ceuta following a significant border crisis, during which an estimated 80,000 migrants, primarily young Moroccan men, arrived over two days. Reports indicated at least 57 deaths during the journey. Morocco has historically disputed Spanish sovereignty over the territory.

Real Madrid released a statement acknowledging the club's acceptance of Elche's request to show support and wear the shirts. However, the club also stated they respected differing opinions and granted players the freedom to choose whether to wear the t-shirt. Barcelona opted not to wear the solidarity shirts for their LaLiga fixture.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has stated that accommodation for up to 10,000 migrants was being prepared in Ceuta, with the government aiming to have the situation under control by the end of the year. He indicated that the majority of migrants had been returned to Morocco.
